Family, my 30th Birthday, and Rise Up

Rise Up always falls between Christmas and New Years (Dec 28-Jan1), which is also often a special time for families. For the last 10 years, since 2002, I have celebrated my birthday(Dec 30) away from my family and at CCO’s Rise Up Conference (except for ’08 when Vanessa and I visited her family in Hong [...]

CCO’s Uncle Iggy

Last week all of the CCO missionaries gathered in Ottawa for our annual staff gathering. This is a time to hear updates, share stories, and be renewed in our missionary zeal. Although it takes me away from my family for a week and I miss them dearly, I look forward to and enjoy the [...]

Veni Sancte Spiritus!

When we walked into the Cenacle, the upper room, where Jesus celebrated his last Passover meal and where the apostles waited for the Holy Spirit (Pentecost), there were so many people in the room it was hard to hear our guide’s voice, just three feet away! There were even stray cats in the room running [...]

Was Jesus Really Here?

Yesterday we visited St Peter in Gallicantu church. Its the place where, tradition tells us, Jesus was tried by the high priest Caiaphas and where Peter denied knowing Our Lord three times. (Gallicantu means “Cock Crows“) In the courtyard outside there is an ancient stairway leading to the Kidron Valley and towards the Mount of [...]

Verbum Caro Hic Factum Est

2 Days ago, 18 CCO Missionaries began their ten day pilgrimage through the Holy Land. Vanessa and I are so very blessed to be part of this group. Day one in Nazareth was packed: Mount Tabor (Transfiguration), Capernaum, the Primacy of Peter, and Cana. Our first stop, however, is the subject of this post. Sunday [...]

Faith like my Mother

My daughter Eva is just learning how to imitate actions, and can say mama, dada, yes, and NO (NO! was her first word – emphasis on the exclamation point!). Recently we’ve taught her how to kiss Jesus, on a crucifix or cross, and when we make the sign of the cross she taps her chest [...]

Feet like my Father

“Eva your feet look just like your Father’s!!” – Vanessa Chow My wife delights in the fact that our daughter’s feet, or rather her toes, curl up just like her father’s. She’ll often get us to sit together on the floor, with Eva between my legs, where she can see all twenty toes curled up [...]

Who’s up for Chowbucks?

Last Friday CCO Vancouver held a Coffee House, where young adults and students got to showcase their various talents through music, skits, dance, and comedy. It was a great evening of fellowship and there was a lot of great talent! Or so I heard…..I was relegated to the back of the kitchen, where I was [...]

Moving at the speed of…Facebook?

Vanessa and I recently shared some news through Facebook. Simultaneously we changed our status to a cleverly worded clue, OV(bun)EN, alluding to the fact that there was a “bun in the oven”. No, we were not baking at the time and YES! we indeed are expecting a baby, due in July. When we posted the [...]

My brother always caught the fish

Some of my favorite childhood memories have been the weekends fishing with my brother and Dad. We would often get all of our gear ready the night before, get up before sunrise, and be on the water before most people would pour their first cup of coffee. While I enjoyed being on the water and [...]
